Annual herb, 70 cm high. Stem green, round, hollow, seems lying flat on the ground, stems very small often buried in ground, brown to dark grey. Leaves are soft, dark to shining green. Flowers small, yellow, with finger-like petals. Pedicel is branched and the seeds develop at end of branched pedicel. Fruit are dark green, round balls.

Perennial, tall shrub/tree, 4 cm high. Stem smooth, light grey, young growth brown to dark with lenticels (white dots). Leaves simple, margin smooth, ovate, dull green below and pale green above. Flowers yellowish, cone-shaped with elongated fingerlike petals. Sepals short, reduced, green. Roots dark brown to red, papery.
