The Modisa Wildlife Project area is located on a 10000 ha ranch, Grassland Game Farm, Ghanzi district, enclosed by a 2.6 m game fence. About 4000 ha of this area is fenced off by an internal 1.2m cattle fence, in which cattle are grazed, but which does not restrict wildlife movement. The land is owned by Mr. W de Graaf, who owns the Grassland Safari Lodge, some 4 km from the Modisa Wildlife Camp (established in 2010). The two systems are run independently, the Lodge being managed by Mr. de Graaf’s employees, and the Modisa Camp managed by Mr. Val Gruener and his staff, assisted by paying volunteers. The Modisa Company leases the area on which their camp is established from Mr. de Graaf, and the staff has several responsibilities relating to management of the area. In addition , Mr. de Graaf, has large holding pens in which 11 lions in three groups, 35 wild-dogs in one group, and two leopards in smaller pens are being held pending their agreed (by Government and Landowner) release into game areas. These animals were captured on cattle farms where they were faced with eradication. A hand-raised lioness has her own pen at Modisa camp site. To cater for enhancement of visitor experience, several large species not native to the area were introduced into the wild. These include Giraffe, Plains zebra, Impala and White rhino.
