Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Flowers in dense axillary or terminal heads surrounded by ovate prickly bracts. Calyx ± actinomorphic, 5-lobed. Corolla ± actinomorphic, weakly 2-lipped. Stamens 4, didynamous. Capsule cylindric. Seeds with hygroscopic hairs.

Derivation of name: Named after George Crabbe (1754 - 1832), the English poet

Worldwide: 12 species in tropical and South Africa

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
