Shrubs or small trees; bark thick and rough. Leaves crowded on thick terminal branches; lamina simple; margins irregularly crenate, shallowly lobed, glabrescent to densely villous, venation palmate; petiole sheathing. Inflorescence of terminal racemes; flowers actinomorphic; sepals 5, much shorter than the petals, imbricate, basally fused; petals 5, red, rarely white. Fruit a capsule, narrowly oblong; septicidal. Seeds numerous, minute. This genus was previously in Melianthaceae. Derivation of name: after Sir George Grey, 1812-1898, Governor of the Cape Colony. Worldwide: 3 species in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa. |
