Description of the family

Shrubs or small trees; bark thick and rough. Leaves crowded at the ends of the branches; lamina simple, almost circular, 3-veined from the base; margins irregularly crenate. Inflorescence of terminal racemes; flowers actinomorphic; sepals 5, much shorter than the petals, imbricate, basally fused; petals 5, showy, red, rarely white; stamens 10 in 2 whorls, exserted. Fruit an almost cylindric 5-grooved capsule.

Worldwide: 1 genus and 3 species in South Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated genus and 2 cultivated taxa.
