Description of the genus

Solitary (in ours), unarmed, pleonanthic, monoecious palms. Crownshaft absent. Leaves pinnate; basal sheaths with fibrous margins. Leaflets single-folded, reduplicate. Inflorescences simple or branched to one order. Peduncular bract large, fusiform, woody. Fruit a drupe.

Derivation of name: after a name used by Pliny for a palm which in fact was not a Syagrus.

Worldwide: Caribbean and tropical South America.

Zimbabwe: 4 cultivated taxa.
