Description:
Erect, robust perennial suffrutex to 80 cm tall. Leaves silvery-grey, bullate, 8-25 × 2-7.5 cm, elliptic; apex acute; margin irregularly serrate; base cuneate, tapering into a narrow winged petiole-like midrib and widening into a sheathing base below. Capitula large, usually solitary. Phyllaries imbricate, felted-lanate. Corollas red with a slender tube widening above. Achenes densely appressed-hispid. Pappus of barbellate setae.
Notes: Superficially similar to Erythrocephalum zambesianum with its red flowers and greyish leaves, but the Erythrocephalum has a distinct outer whorl of flattened ray florets which are not present in Pleiotaxis.
