Description:
A more or less erect annual herb, 10-50 cm high with stems covered in purplish bristles. Leaves narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, 2-8 cm long, entire or with irregular lobe-like teeth, bristly above, white woolly beneath; margin rolled under. Capitula terminal, subtended by several leaves. Involucres bracts linear, 8-12 mm long, bristle-tipped and 10-20 bristles along the margins. Florets yellow; rays linear-elliptic 10-25 mm long. Achenes narrowly obconic, 4-5 mm long, 10-12-ribbed, densely greyish-white hairy, together forming a mass of white fluff often more conspicuous than the flower heads.
Notes: Capitula only open in full sun.
Derivation of specific name: gorterioides: resembling a Gorteria, a genus in Asteraceae restricted to the Western Cape,South Africa and Namibia.
Habitat: In short open and wooded grassland, often with Acacia or mopane; also at margins of seasonal pans and on floodplains.
