Description:	Annual herb, up to 2(-3) m, stem often purplish. Leaves alternate; petiole 2-7 cm; lamina broadly ovate, entire or the lower 3-lobed, scabrid; base cordate; apex acuminate; margin crenate or serrate. Peduncles 1.5 cm in diameter below capitulum. Phyllaries in 2 series. Rays 2-4 cm, orange-red. Pappus of short (c.1.5 mm) free scales and 2 longer setae.

Habitat:	A weed of roadsides and disturbed ground, often forming large colonies of tall, stout plants in damp, shady places.
