Description:
Robust shrub-like perennial up to 3 m. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, pubescent particularly beneath. Flowers in clusters at the ends of branches, pale to deep pink, darker in the corolla throat. Fruit a glabrous dehiscent capsule, brown.
Notes: Its presence at SRGH in cultivated folders only, indicates it has only recently spread as a well naturalised escape in Zimbabwe.
Derivation of specific name: carnea: flesh-coloured;
fistulosa: hollow like a pipe but closed at both ends
Habitat: Along riverbanks and roadside ditches, particularly near rural habitation, where it is often used as an ornamental hedge plant.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1000 m
Flowering time:Some throughout the year
Worldwide distribution: Native from Florida to Argentina.
