Description:
Erect annual herb up to 25 cm high. Stems slender, 4-ridged, hairless, branching from the base. Leaves mainly crowded at the base, forming more or less a rosette, ovate-oblong to elliptic, narrowing into a petiole-like base; also 3-5 pairs of sessile leaves along the stems. Flowers in a terminal branched head, pale yellow to bright yellow. Calyx segments 5, ovate-lanceolate, 3-5 mm long, not winged.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: pentandra: with five stamens.
burchellii: after William John Burchell (1781-1863), botanical collector, painter, writer, gardener, entomologist, early explorer and naturalist in South Africa.
Habitat: In moist places besides rivers and in damp sandy soils between rocks in riverbeds.
