Description:
Branched annual herb up to 1 m tall; stems hairy, more so on one side. Leaves more or less narrowly ovate to elliptic, 3–9.7 cm long, with scattered pubescence, mainly on veins and midrib; margins serrate, with a pair of basal setae to 8 mm long; petioles 0.8–3.5 cm long, hairy, more so on the upper surface; stipules 3–8 mm long, hairy. Inflorescence of 1–3-flowered clusters, all parts hairy ; peduncles 1–2 mm long; pedicels 1.5–2 mm long; bracts up to 1 mm long, pilose. Sepals 5, 4–5 mm long, 1 mm wide. Petals 5, obovate, 3.5–5 mm long, pale yellow; stamens c. 25, 3–4 mm long. Capsules spherical, strongly echinate, 0.5–0.8 cm long, splitting into 5 valves, hairless.
Notes: Although apparently recorded from Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe this species is absent from the Flora Zambesiaca treatment (Volume 2 part 1, 1963).
Derivation of specific name: pseudocapsularis: referring to the fact that this species most closely resembles Corchorus capsularis, a species from India.
