Description:
Shrub or small tree usually 1-6 m high; bark dark-grey to reddish; young branchlets hairless. Leaves bipinnate, 7-18 cm long, mostly hairless; pinnae in 4-8 pairs; leaflets 9-32 pairs per pinna, narrowly oblanceolate to very narrowly elliptic or linear-oblong, 7-15 mm long, hairless, base only slightly asymmetric. Flowers cream or yellow, in racemes 5-12 cm long, hairless but with minute reddish mealy glands present round the base of the pedicels. Petals 3-4·5 mm. long. Pods 10-19 cm long.
Notes: Most similar to Elephantorrhiza elephantina differs in being a shrub or small tree with branched perennial woody stems and not a suffrutex with annual stems; also in the leaflet-base which is less asymmetric than in E. elephantina.

Habitat: In woodland and grassland, usually in rocky places.
