Description: |
Perennial herb growing from corms with 2-3 long, trailing foliage leaves present at the time of flowering. Flowers solitary at the ends of a "rhipidium", blue-violet with white to yellow nectar guides. |
Notes: | This species resembles Moraea natalensis but can be distinguished by the multiple, trailing foliage leaves and the nectar guides, which lack the deep violet edgings. In Zimbabwe the distribution of the 2 species do not seem to overlap. |
Derivation of specific name: | carsonii: named after Alexander Carson (1850-1896), British engineer and avid plant collector in Zambia. |
Habitat: | Rocky areas of montane grassland, occasionally in seasonally wet areas. |
