Description:
Robust perennial herb, up to 40 cm tall, growing from a stout vertical rhizome. Leaves 7-16, overlapping at the base, 10-60 cm long, finely many-ribbed, greyish pubescent beneath with mostly 2-armed hairs. Inflorescences 2-14, usually appearing with the leaves, up to 30 cm long. Flowers 2-10 in a raceme-like arrangement 3-10 cm long; bracts linear-lanceolate, 7-30 mm long, densely greyish hairy; tepals up to 2 cm long, yellow, greyish hairy on the outside; outer tepals slightly longer than inner. Capsule 5-8 mm long with black and glossy seeds.

Habitat: In short grassland on sandy soils and on rocky hillsides.

Worldwide distribution: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini and Mpumalanga, Free-State, Kwa-Zulu-Natal and Eastern Cape, South Africa.
