Common names:
Frequency: Locally very common
Status: Native
Description:
Small plants. Leaves mostly 1-3, ovate, blue-green to olive-green above sometimes spotted with purple, often purplish beneath, more or less densely set with tubercle-based ciliate hairs on the upper surface. Inflorescences 1-several, many-flowered; peduncles mostly less than 15 cm long, often densely spotted with purple brown markings. Flowers very brightly coloured violet-pink.
Notes: This distinct species is locally very common in the greater Troutbeck-Nyanga-Juliasdale area. The name given is based on specimens of this taxon at SRGH that were determined by S. Venter in 1993 as L. sandersonii, a species also found in South Africa. We suspect that the taxonomic status of the Zimbabwe population may well be different but until a new name has been officially published we will use this name.
