Description:
Robust, caespitose, rhizomatous perennial; culms up to 230 cm high, erect, branched, with stout internodes, glaucous. Leaves glabrous, scabrid on the margins; basal sheaths distichous and keeled; ligule a very short (c. 1 mm) minutely fringed membrane; laminas 20–100 cm × 2–6 mm, keeled, often folded, ± revolute, tapering to a very fine point at the apex. Racemes up to 15 in subdigitate groups, 6–12 cm long, unequal, slender, flexuous, virtually glabrous, exserted from the spatheoles, dark red; peduncles longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels filiform, scabrid, almost glabrous, the internodes slightly shorter than the sessile spikelets. Spikelets similar. Sessile spikelet 4.3–6.3 mm long; inferior glume with a shallow median groove, glabrous; superior glume ± flat on the back; superior lemma entire or bifid in the upper 1/5–1/2, awnless or with a geniculate awn 3.5–8 mm long; anthers 2–3 mm long, straw-coloured. Pedicelled spikelet male, 4.5–7.5 mm long, awnless to shortly mucronate.
