Description:
Tufted, usually erect, perennial. Culms up to 2.5 m tall. Racemes usually 10-18, each raceme 4-13 cm long. Spikelets 2-2.8 mm long, ovate, yellowish-green, paired in 2-4 rows along the rhachis. Upper glume sparsely pilose on the upper surface, ciliate on the margin.
Notes: The altitude of 1200 m mentioned in FZ 10(3): 89 is far too limited for this species.
Derivation of specific name: urvillei: after J.S.C.D. d’Urville (1790-1842), a French naval officer who collected the type specimen
Habitat: Preferring wet, or seasonally wet, habitats, stream sides and ditches, sometimes in drier places or disturbed habitats.

Worldwide distribution: Native of South America.
