Densely caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 90 cm tall, erect, terete and somewhat wiry, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous, chartaceous, terete, eglandular, long-persistent; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 8–20 cm × 1–3 mm, linear, usually involute, sometimes flat, glabrous or thinly pilose, eglandular.Panicle 7–25 cm long, narrowly ovate, loose and open, the spikelets evenly distributed on pedicels 1–5 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, eglandular.Spikelets 5–11 × 0.8–1 mm, linear, laterally compressed, 5–10-flowered, the lemmas disarticulating from below upwards, the rhachilla persistent; glumes unequal, ± keeled, narrowly lanceolate in profile, glabrous, acute at the apex, the inferior 0.3–0.8(1.3) mm long, scarcely exceeding the base of the adjacent lemma (rarely reaching almost to the middle), the superior 1–1.7(2) mm long, reaching about 1/4 the way along the adjacent lemma; lemmas 2–2.6 mm long, keeled, narrowly semi-ovate in profile (with straight keel and gibbous margins), firmly membranous with indistinct lateral nerves, appressed to the rhachilla, those in opposite rows not imbricate, the rhachilla visible between them, purple with yellow apex, glabrous, acute at the apex; palea persistent, glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, smooth and glabrous; anthers 3, 1–1.8 mm long.Caryopsis 0.8–1.2 mm long, oblong, laterally compressed. |
