Notes: Notes: Erect, tufted, annual grass, up to 1 m when in flower. Culms erect to slightly geniculate, yellow-green but conspicuously purple-tinted at nodes, glabrous, slender. Leaf blade bright green, gradually tapering over a length of 12 - 20 cm, soft and tender, glabrous, normally expanded, rounded basally at collar. Ligule a band of dense, white, silky hairs, 1 mm high. Leaf sheath 6 cm long, glabrous, tightly clasping around culm. Inflorescence a compact spike, 40 - 70 mm long and 5 mm wide, borne on very slender erect, glabrous peduncle, up to 50 cm long. Spikelets densely arranged, ellipsoid, 2 mm long, without awn, but interspersed by long, stiff hairs, yellow-green but rapidly discolouring to dark purple; glumes pale green to pale pink-tinted.
