Description of the genus

Trees, shrubs or subshrubs, glabrous. Bark with yellow pigment present beneath. Stipules laciniate or deeply divided into linear segments, markedly longitudinally striate, persistent on first year shoots. Leaves petiolate; midrib raised on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces; venation with characteristic ascending primary laterals linked by secondary laterals.

Derivation of name: After William Dunlop Brackenridge (1810-1893), Scottish-born American nurseryman, landscape architect and horticulturist who collected plants widely during a US exploring expedition but not in Africa.

Worldwide: 6-7 species in the Old World tropics

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
