Description of the genus

Dioecious trees or shrubs. Trunk crowned with a tuft of large pinnate leaves. Leaflets usually spiny with parallel nerves. Scales of female cones with only 2 ovules on their adaxial side.

Worldwide: Approximately 65 species in Tropical and South Africa (African Plant Database).

Zimbabwe: 3 taxa.
