Description of the genus

Climbing herb. Stipules mostly reflexed and persistent; stipels lanceolate. Leaves pinnately 3-foliolate; Inflorescences axillary, falsely racemose. Calyx 2-lipped, upper lip entire or emarginate, lower 3-lobed. Standard round, usually reflexed, auriculate with 2 calli or appendages on the inner face. Style distinctly thickened, laterally flattened, hairy on the internal face. Pods oblong-falcate to linear-oblong, tipped by the persistent style. Seeds ovoid, flattened, with a long arillate hilum.

Worldwide: 1 variable species originating in W Africa and widely cultivated throughout the tropics
