Description of the genus

Unarmed trees. Stipules small, caducous. Leaves 2-pinnate; specialised glands on petiole or rhachis 0. Leaflets alternate. Inflorescence of small flowers in a pedunculate spike-like raceme, usually aggregated into a panicle. Calyx lobes 5, ± connate below. Petals equal, 5. Stamens 10; filaments often alternately long and short. Pod dehiscent, oblong or oblong-elliptic, flattened, woody.

Derivation of name: Derived from the Greek words for 'red' and 'sap', referring to the red sap of E. suaveolens

Worldwide: 9 species in the Old World tropics

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
