Plants glabrous, flowering with the leaves. Leaves cordate, ovate or lanceolate, with or without a pseudopetiole, often spotted. Scapes 1-2 per plant. Inflorescence a spike or a raceme; bracts lacking. Flowers ± globular or shortly cylindric. Perianth-segments united up to 2 mm, white, yellowish green or green, often persistent in fruit; apex of inner segments cucullate and often yellow. Ovary sessile, with 1-2 basal ovules per locule. Fruit a subglobose capsule, with 1-2 seeds. Seeds globose to ovoid with a folded, black and shiny surface. Worldwide: 15 species in Africa south of the Sahara. Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
