Description of the genus

Robust perennial, rhizomatous, often mat-forming. Stems tufted, the base often covered with fibrous remains of old leaf sheaths. Leaves eligulate. Inflorescence a panicle with clusters of spikelets on peduncles emerging from the axis of the leaves. Spikelets at the end of branches. Stamens conspicuously green/yellow. Nutlet with persistent perianth bristles.

Worldwide: 15 species in the Old World and Chile.
