Deciduous trees, rarely shrubs, up to 40 m tall with unusually deep furrowed bark; branches without spines. Leaves singly or doubly serrate, base usually asymmetric; stipules free, falling early. Inflorescence in fascicles, racemes or cymes, subtended by 2 bracts. Flowers appear in spring before the leaves, on branches of the previous year. Fruit flattened with membranous wings. Worldwide: 25-30 species from northern temperate regions to N Mexico Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
