Trees. Leaves opposite or in whorls, imparipinnate. Inflorescence of terminal corymbose racemes. Flowers orange-red. Calyx spathaceous, splitting open on one side to reveal the corolla. Corolla campanulate, ventricose, slightly 2-lipped. Stamens 4. Fruit an oblong capsule tapering at both ends; erect (in ours). Derivation of name: spathe-like (Greek) referring to the spathaceous calyx. Worldwide: 1 species in tropical Africa Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
