Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, sessile. Capitula solitary or in terminal corymbs, heterogamous; outer radiate florets female; disk florets bisexual. Phyllaries 2-3-seriate. Receptacular scales 0. Achenes cylindric, 4-ribbed and 4-angled, setulose-pubescent on the angles. Pappus 2-seriate; outer of short scales sometimes connate into a crown; inner of longer setae.

Worldwide: c.80 species in temperate and warm Eurasia

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
