Description of the genus

Perennials. Inflorescence a narrow and often erect, panicle. Spikelets 2-6-flowered, laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets; lowermost florets bisexual, upper reduced. Glumes unequal, persistent, keeled, acute to acuminate; lower shorter, 1-3-nerved; upper 3-5-nerved. Lemmas exserted from the glumes, 5-11-nerved, dorsally awned, 2-fid, sometimes the lobes with apical bristles.

Worldwide: c. 100 species, mainly in temperate Eurasia but also on tropical mountains

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
