Description of the genus

Perennial herbs (ours), with a characteristic minty smell. Leaves opposite. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, spike-like. Flowers small; bracts leaf-like, smaller than leaves; bracteoles linear. Calyx 10-nerved, ± equally 5-toothed. Corolla obscurely 2-lipped, 4-lobed. Stamens 4, ± equal, spreading, exserted. Nutlets ovoid.

Worldwide: 25 species in the temperate Old World

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
