Dioecious trees. Leaves simple, lanceolate to elliptic, entire. Inflorescence dense, terminal, enclosed at first with a globular bud, protected by 4 ovate-acuminate herbaceous bracts which are shed as the inflorescence expands. Male flowers arranged in cymes, resembling a pseudo-umbel; female flowers in umbels. Flowers unisexual. Petals 4. Fruit a drupe. Worldwide: 50 species in Temperate Eurasia to Indo-China, South Sudan to Southern Tropical Africa, North America to Bolivia. Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
