Trees or shrubs; young branchlets 4-angled to sub-terete, usually thickened at nodes, later terete. Leaves subsessile to shortly petiolate, longitudinally 3-nerved; lateral nerves mostly not merging with middle nerve near apex, the surface often granular. Inflorescences of (1)2-to many-flowered cymes, axillary or on old wood, sometimes arranged in axillary panicles; bracts minute. Flowers 4-merous, small. Calyx tube/receptacle sub-hemispheric to campanulate; limb 4-toothed or lobed. Petals broadly ovate, whitish or bluish. Fruit a berry crowned by persistent calyx. Seeds large, straight. Worldwide: About 30 species in tropical Africa. Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
