Description

This is a handwritten checklist of 322 species of plant found in the Thestor survey area given to me by Bob Drummond in 1990.

This list does not appear to have been published and the only reference I have been able to trace is in Bowyer-Bower, T, Mapaure, I and Drummond, RB (1996) which states that “a botanical survey undertaken in the early 1980s in a drier part of the Borrowdale Park vlei recorded over 320 species of flowering plants …”.

I originally understood that the survey area was the northern parts of Borrowdale Common (our location BC) and this has been confirmed by Professor Alan Gardiner (2020, in litt.).

The survey was in connection with potential food plants for the Thestor basutus butterfly.

A number of items on the checklist could not be matched to particular species, mostly because the record is to genus only or in some cases because of uncertainty as to what species are attended.

A full list of these unmatched entries is as follows:

  1. Ledebouria sp.
  2. Ledebouria undulata
  3. Senecio sp. (near latifolius)
  4. Vigna unguiculata subsp. cylindrica
There are also some cases where the species name is illegible.
