Synonyms: |
Syzygium paniculatum sensu auct. non Gaertn. |
Common names: | Australian brush-cherry (English) Australian water pear (English) |
Description: | Shrub or tree. Leaves elliptic, hairless, glossy above; apex acuminate. Inflorescences of branched axillary or terminal panicles; peduncles 3-5 or more-flowered. Flowers white. Fruit ovoid, rose-purple, 1-2 cm long. |
Notes: | Originally named by me (MAH) as Syzygium paniculatum Gaertn.; the identification was corrected in April 2016 by Dr Peter G. Wilson of the New South Wales Herbarium. Dr Wilson commented as follows: "This is Syzygium australe, not S. paniculatum ... this misidentification was common in Australia until the 1980s when the correct application of the latter name was resolved. True S. paniculatum has a magenta-coloured fruit and the seed is polyembryonic". |
