Description:

Clump-forming succulent perennial, up to 20 cm high. Stems 4-angled or 4-ribbed, tapering at the apex, more or less erect, velvety, grey-green with tuberculate teeth along the angles, tipped with rudimentary leaves. Flowers 1-2, deeply bell-shaped, up to 8 cm long, corolla fused for most of the length, smooth and slightly velvety on the outside, wrinkled and velvety inside, dark maroon-red. Corona raised inside the base of the tube, embedded in long curly hairs. The flowers have a very unpleasant smell. |

The listing of this species for the Central Division by Mapaura & Timberlake in Sabonet Report 33: 22 (2004) as native appears to be erroneous. It most likely refers to a specimen of cultivated origin. |
