Description: | Large evergreen tree with a long, straight stem, which is characteristically fluted. Leaves narrowly to broadly oblong-elliptic, shiny dark green and glabrous above, covered in rusty or silvery velvet hairs below. Midrib and lateral veins clearly visible; margin entire. Flowers in short, axillary clusters, whitish, densely covered by rusty hairs. Fruit ellipsoid to almost spherical, covered in dark brown hairs. |
Notes: | In forest situations the leaves may be confused with those of Englerophytum magalismontanum. The latter usually has narrower leaves with the lateral veins obscured by the velvet hairs on the underside. |
Derivation of specific name: | gorungosanum: of Mt Gorongosa in Mozambique, where the type was collected. |
