Common names: Monkey thorn (English) Muchinanga (Shona) Nkotokua (Shona) Umkhaya (Ndebele)
Description: Medium to large deciduous tree. Prickles in opposite pairs, short, broad and hooked. Flowers in long slender spikes, cream to pale yellow, the calyces showing red before the flowers open. The pods are long, up to 25cm, flat and hairless.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: galpinii: named for E.E. Galpin, South African naturalist and collector (1858 - 1941).
Flowering time:Sep - Oct
Worldwide distribution: Tanzania to Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana.
Growth form(s): Tree.
