Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves usually ± circular-reniform in outline. Flowers usually fasciculate, axillary, pink, mauve, purple or sometimes white. Epicalyx of 3, ± free, linear or ovate bracts. Calyx cup-shaped, 5-lobed; lobes triangular. Petals usually emarginate at apex. Ovary of 9-15 free carpels. Fruit a discoid schizocarp, separating into 9-15, indehiscent, awnless mericarps.

Worldwide: 40 species, occurring in Europe, the Mediterranean region, temperate Asia and on tropical African mountains

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
