Description of the genus

Unarmed shrubs. Stipules caducous. Leaves simple, entire. Flowers solitary, in cymose clusters or corymbs. Petals 5, white or pink. Carpels 2-5; ovules 2 in each carpel. Styles 2-5. Fruit with mealy flesh, red (in ours) with 2-5 pyrenes.

Worldwide: 261 species in the temperate Old World

Zimbabwe: 6 cultivated taxa.
