Description of the genus

Herbs to 2(-3) m. Leaves distichous. Inflorescence terminal, showy. Calyx tubular. Corolla tube slender; petals long and narrow, reflexed. Labellum 2-lobed, showy. Lateral stamens petaloid, showy. Filaments usually long and slender; anthers without a crest. Capsule spherical or oblong, often red or orange inside.

Derivation of name: From Greek: hedys meaning sweet and chios meaning snow, referring to the fragrant white flower of the type species Hedychium coronarium.

Worldwide: c. 70-80 species occurring in Madagascar, Indomalesia and Himalayas; some naturalised elsewhere

Zimbabwe: 3 cultivated taxa.
