Evergreen, perennial herbs, with thick creeping
rhizomes. Leaves distichous. Inflorescences of terminal rhipidia;
spathes sheathing. Flowers actinomorphic, Iris-like, white with
yellow nectar-guides on the outer tepals. Style divided into
3 broad petaloid branches apposed to the outer tepals; each
branch terminating in a pair of petaloid appendages (crests);
stigmas transverse and abaxial below base of crests. Anthers
appressed to the style branches. Fruit a capsule. Worldwide: 6 species in eastern and southern Africa;one in the Lord Howe Is Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa. |
