Description of the genus

Dioecious trees. Leaves pinnate; leaflets numerous, the lower ones often modified to sharp spines.

Worldwide: 17 species in tropical and warm parts of Africa, including 1 in Europe.

Zimbabwe: 6 cultivated taxa.
