Description of the genus

Deciduous trees, up to 30 m, with smooth grey bark. Leaves simple appearing at the same time as the flowers. Flowers usually paired on a short peduncle, concealed by the numerous bracts. Fruit a sharply 3-angled nut, 1-seeded, normally in pairs.

Worldwide: 10 - 13 species, native to temperate Europe, Asia and North America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
