Description of the genus

Erect herbaceous perennials with corms and long wiry stems. Leaves Iris-like. Inflorescence a spike or a raceme of spikes; flowers actinomorphic; tepals united proximally into a tube, white, yellow or red. Fruit a capsule, splitting along the centre of ovary cells.

Worldwide: Over 50 species, native to South Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
