Description of the genus

Herbs perennial; rhizome thick, horizontal; stem leafy, long. Leaves oblong-lanceolate. Inflorescence a panicle borne directly from the rhizome, flexuous, decumbent; bract bifid-trifid; flowers shortly pedicelled, bracteolate; calyx cylindric, membranous, shortly lobed; corolla tube cylindric, tri-lobed, mid-lobe oblong, convex, lateral lobes narrower. Fruit capsules, oblong or globose, coriaceous, indehiscent. Seeds small angular.

Worldwide: Species 11 from South India to Malesia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
