Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs with dense branching. Bark fissured or plated. Leaves spirally arranged, all alike on one shoot; juvenile leaves awl-shaped, spreading, apex acute, sharp-tipped; adult leaves needle-like or scale-like, overlapping. Seed-bearing structure axillary near shoot tip; bracts several, bases greatly enlarged, fleshy and red when mature. Seed naked, inverted at first, turning erect when mature; base cupped by membranous scale.

Worldwide: 25 species from SE Asia to New Zealand.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
