Description of the genus

Shrubs, sometimes almost herbaceous or climbers. Leaves simple, spirally arranged, with entire margins often with the midrib prominent below; stipules minute or absent. Flowers solitary, terminal or axillary, sessile in a whorl of floral leaves or pedicellate. Sepals 5. Petals 5, yellow. Stamens few or numerous, sometimes all on one side of the carpels, sometimes reduced to staminodes. Carpels 2-5, free, superior. Fruit a follicle usually dehiscent at the top.

Worldwide: About 150 species, mostly from Australia and New Guinea; one species endemic to Madagascar.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
