Usually dioecious trees, rarely shrubs. Leaves usually petiolate, simple, alternate with small stipules, margin entire or toothed; lamina pinnately veined. Inflorescence usually consisting of axillary branched cymes; sometimes reduced to fascicles or solitary flowers, or rarely flowers in long raceme-like panicles from trunk or older branches. Flowers hypogynous; sepals imbricate; petals 4 or 5(-14), each with a hairy basal scale inside. Ovary superior. Fruit a berry. Seeds many, packed in pulp. Worldwide: 40 species in tropical Asia Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
