Description of the genus

Deciduous trees. Leaves simple, glandular-punctate at vein axils abaxially. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate, corymbose or racemose. Flowers bell-shaped, calyx bilabiate, or irregularly divided, globose in bud. Corolla campanulate, bilabiate, upper lip bilobed, lower lip trilobed. Fruit capsules long, loculicidally dehiscent, terete, pendent. Seeds many in several rows, rounded, thinly membranous, with hair tufts at both ends.

Worldwide: 13 species in North America and East Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
